I moved to Burntwood in 1971.   I’d never seen anything like the Wakes but it became a must see event when I had children.  There were lots of different things going on, and people came from other areas to join in the fun.   What I didn’t really think about was how much work and commitment went into organising it.  Of course there used to be a parade as well, and I decided to do a float for Pathway Project and the CVS where I worked running the voluntary car scheme.   It was the year that an actor from Home and Away was visiting.   I can’t remember his name – no prizes but memory pride if you can name him.

Since becoming a councillor I have seen how much effort our teams put into making it happen.   They make the Wakes a brilliant event to attend with something different every year to enjoy.

We know that the cost of living crisis has made the summer a difficult time of year, with no school lunches and an expectation of families being able to go out and enjoy themselves.  For many families that is difficult.   I remember well how it feels to have to keep saying no to your children because money was tight.   I love that we have been able to provide the Wakes and Play in the Park events free of charge, and with lots of fun things to do, and thanks to our sponsors even provide free children.

The day was amazing with free fairground rides, a petting zoo,  a climbing wall, lots of charity stalls, a market and so much more.   There was music and a number of singers, including Wagner of Britain’s Got Talent fame.   There were free packed lunches for all of the children and free arts and craft activities and facepainting for them.   All of this was only possible due to the support of our amazing sponsors.

It is difficult to count everyone coming in to the Wakes but our estimation is that 5000 people came to join us.

Finally I have to thank the brilliant team at Burntwood Town Council who worked tirelessly to make it happen, ably supported by our wonderful councillors.  They put in so many hours of work so thank you all so much.  Please know it is greatly appreciated. Of course now that Wakes 2024 is over it is time to begin planning Wakes 2025.   See you there.
